Engineers play a pivotal role in revitalizing and sustaining their communities through research and innovation. College of Engineering students lead in their community by introducing local children to career opportunities in science and technology fields. They are involved in a variety of K-12 programs such as the Detroit-Area Pre-College Engineering Program and the Department of Computer Science's summer camps.
Each year, the College of Engineering invites local middle and high school girls to attend their Future Society of Women Engineers event, giving girls a chance to experience all disciplines of engineering through fun workshops and experiments. The College of Engineering also offers programs to high school students. For example, students at Cristo Rey High School can take a 1200 level engineering class that teaches them to build a robot and earn credits for college.
