Program specialization at the master’s degree level may be undertaken in five areas:
- biomechanics of injury
- biomedical instrumentation
- biomedical imaging
- biomaterials and tissue engineering
- computational and systems biology
These program specializations are available to both part-time and full-time students, in either research or non-research degree programs.

The master’s degree in biomedical engineering is offered under the following options:
- Plan A: A minimum of thirty-two credits in course work, including an eight-credit thesis.
- Plan C: A minimum of thirty-four credits in course work.
For either plan, students must complete the following core requirements: BME 5020, BME 7995 (Adv. Quantitative Physiology) and BME 8070.

Students must take a minimum of two 7000-level courses or above (at least 6 credits) if they are enrolled in Plan A and a minimum of three 7000-level courses or above (at least 9 credits) if they are enrolled in Plan C. Directed study and directed research courses (BME 7990 and 7996) cannot be counted toward the satisfaction of the 7000-level and above course requirement. A maximum of four credits in directed study or directed research (BME 5990, 7990, and 7996) can be applied towards the degree. Thesis credit requirements are met by satisfactory completion of BME 8999. No more than 8 credits can be taken outside of BME. Prior approval of advisor must be received for courses outside of BME.
Students enrolled in the master’s degree program are required to file a Plan of Work with the Graduate Officer of the College when eight graduate credits have been earned. Following this, the applicant should petition his/her advisor to advance his/her rank to "candidate." The status of candidate must be authorized by the time twelve graduate credits have been earned, or else subsequent registration will be denied. All course work must be completed in accordance with the regulations of the Graduate School and the College governing graduate scholarship and degrees. A minimum GPA of 3.0 must be maintained throughout the program. Graduate School requirements can be found in the Wayne State University Graduate Bulletin.
