Undergraduate research opportunities

The College of Engineering offers competitive Research Opportunities for Engineering Undergraduates (ROEU) awards to eligible students. The College's Research Advisory Committee will evaluate the applications and make award recommendations to the Dean. Up to 20 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students.

Application

Students can submit one application per academic year in the ROEU program. Faculty may supervise up to two Engineering ROEU students per academic year. Renewal or new proposal requests from 2017-18 ROEU awardees must be accompanied by a progress or final report on project accomplishments to-date, including a list of public presentations at College and University research events.

Completed applications should be emailed as a single PDF to OADR@eng.wayne.edu by 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2018.

Student/Faculty Matching

A list of potential ROEU projects can be found here. Students are encouraged to contact faculty members with ROEU projects or locate other research projects within their disciplines or related areas of interest.

Award and Co-Sponsorship

The first $500 award will be applied to awardees' student accounts in the Fall Semester; the remaining $500 will be awarded in the winter semester contingent upon awardees' satisfactory performance in the lab as determined by the faculty mentor. The department or faculty mentor may co-sponsor the award with additional funding, but the maximum College funding will be $1,000 per awardee per academic year.

Report and Presentation

ROEU awardees must submit a five page report on or before 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2019 to their faculty mentor and to OADR@eng.wayne.edu. Additional materials, such as appendices, PowerPoint presentations, etc. are welcome but the submission should all be sent as a single PDF. Selected research projects will be highlighted on the COE Undergraduate Research Website. Previous awardees' research accomplishment can be found on the ROEU website.

ROEU awardees are also expected to present their work at College and University events, including but not limited to the College of Engineering Student Innovation and Design Day and WSU Undergraduate Research Conference. Prizes will be given to outstanding research presentations.
