Information for Current Students

Before applying

  • Ensure that you have met ECE departmental admission requirements.  
  • Complete online application prior to the application deadlines. This is typically 2 months before classes begin for domestic students, and 3 months for international students. Ensure that any  supplemental documents (transcripts, optional GRE scores, and recommendation letters) are submitted on time.
  • Apply for financial assistantships, available for highly qualified students. Keep in mind that many financial aid applications are due in February to mid-June, so apply early!
  • International Students
    • If you are from a country where English is not the native language, please check english proficiency requirements listed above. 

After admission

  • Choose a concentration area and select appropriate courses from our course descriptions or from the graduate bulletin. Be aware that not all classes are offered every semester. Check the class schedule for your upcoming semester to see if it is available. 
  • Make a draft of the Plan of Work. This form will be submitted later during your first semester; however, drafting it now will help you plan your courses to meet graduation requirements
  • If you have transferred to our program from another university or department, and would like to transfer classes, submit the Transfer of Credit Form to the graduate program officer prior to your first day of class.  Please ensure that you meet eligibility requirements.
  • Thesis Option
    • Browse our faculty research directory, and set up an appointment with a faculty member who is doing research in your area of interest.
    • Select a research advisor and a thesis topic.  
  • International students

First semester

  • Register for classes before the deadlines listed in the registration calendar to avoid late fees.  Tip: Register early to secure a spot in your selected courses.
  • Thesis Option
    • Finalize a thesis topic and select thesis commitee members.
  • International Students
    • You must be registered full-time (8 credits fall and winter terms, 4 credits in the summer) to maintain your visa status.  If you are not, please contact OISS

Second and third semester

  • Submit the Plan of Work form via the blackboard site before completion of 12 credit hours. The plan of work is required to achieve masters candidacy status.
  • Thesis Option
  • International Students
    • F-1 students who have been enrolled full time at least two semesters are eligible to do Curricular Practical Training (CPT)  (industry internships) during their masters program.  The internship must be done during the semester.  When you negotiate an internship offer with a company, your employment start date must be no earlier than the first day of classes, and the end date must be no later than the last day of final exams. Students must submit the following documents to Emily Reetz at least two weeks before the first day of employment: i) CPT application form, ii) updated Plan of Work, and iii) offer letter from the employer.  After approval, students must register for ECE 6991 within 2 weeks after the start of the semester.
