Summer High-School Apprenticeship Program in Engineering (SHAPE)

Overview

SHAPE is a six-week program for high school students to work on emerging energy technologies and CAD/3D modeling. The purpose behind SHAPE is to introduce STEM concepts in real-world practicality and keep young people interested in engineering as a college major and career. Students come to campus three days per week, starting July 1st. Each week's curriculum is centered on a unique theme. In the final week, students tour various laboratories and make presentations to faculty and mentors.

Emerging Energy Technologies

Our battery fabrication and testing program will provide the knowledge needed to remain competitive in the battery industry and upon completion of training students can expect to find their skill set on par with big players in battery technology and battery divisions in auto industries.  The curriculum will be updated at regular intervals based on feedback from participants.

Students will learn:

CAD/3D Modeling

This program introduces students to basic 3D modelling skills using commercial CAD software and 3D printing technology. Computer aided design and 3D printing is used to solve daily problems and create innovative prototypes. Students get hands-on training on various types of 3D printers and use it to design multiple solutions to engineering problems.

Students will learn:

  • Computer Aided Design and 3D Printing
  • Design a cooling system for a laptop
  • Testing of the protype
  • Thermal effects on electronics

Interested students may apply from March 15 to May 30 of the academic year.
