WINCAS and ECE host Automotive SerDes Alliance meeting at Wayne State

Representatives from more than 20 global companies visited the campus of Wayne State University on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 as the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Wayne Center for Integrated Circuits and Systems (WINCAS) hosted the 2019 Automotive SerDes Alliance meeting.

The Automotive SerDes Alliance is a consortium of stakeholders, including suppliers and manufacturers, committed to standardizing camera, display and sensor interfaces in future vehicles. These technologies are typically connected to a main control unit through a SerDes (serializer/deserializer) that permits data transmission. However, most of these solutions are proprietary and incompatible with each other.

"The main objective of the alliance is to define an interoperable standard including physical, data link and transport layers," said Mohammad Ismail, professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering at Wayne State.

Among those in attendance for the meeting were leaders from BMW, JAE, FTZ, Broadcom, NXP, Marvell, Continental, Fraunhofer IIS and others. The event included presentations from various companies, remarks from Dean Farshad Fotouhi and an introduction to WINCAS research activities by Assistant Professor Dimitrios Sounas.
