Biography

Dr. Masoud H. Nazari is an Assistant Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Wayne State University (WSU). His research interest is in modern power systems (MPS). He uses new developments in machine learning and distributed control to solve problems in MPS. Dr. Nazari is the IEEE Senior Member, Global Learning Faculty Fellow at WSU, Chair of IEEE Smart Buildings, Loads, and Consumer Systems Architecture Subcommittee, and Editorial Board of IEEE Technology Conferences. Prior to joining WSU, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at California State University, Long Beach. Dr. Nazari has been the Primary Investigator (PI) of several research projects by the NSF, ARPA-E, DOE, California Energy Commission (CEC), and DTE Energy. Dr. Nazari and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech have received the ARPA-E grant to compete in the Grid Optimized Challenge 3. He is the PI of an NSF AMPS award from the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) and the Co-PI of a DOE RACER award to develop energy resilience planning frameworks. Dr. Nazari led the DTE E-Challenge project to design and develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled HVAC Control for Commercial and Industrial Buildings. He has several publications in the field, including the best paper award in 2017 North American Power Symposium. His papers have been published in prestigious journals and transactions, such as IEEE Trans. on Smart Grid, IEEE Trans. on Power Systems, Automatica, IEEE Trans. on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Springer Science & Business Media, IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, and Control Engineering Practice.

Dr. Nazari was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Advanced Computational Electricity Systems in the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Dual Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Engineering & Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. He was a visiting Ph.D. student in Engineering Systems Division at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds two M.S. degrees one in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University and one in Energy Systems from Sharif University of Technology. In addition, he holds a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from K.N.T. University of Technology.
