Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

The College of Engineering offers competitive undergraduate research opportunity program (UROP) awards to eligible students.   Departments can nominate up to 6 applications for the UROP awards by 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2017.   The College's Research Advisory Committee will evaluate the nominated application packages and make award recommendations to the Dean.    We anticipate up to 20 awards ($1000/award) will be made for the FY 2017-18.  Please see the  Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Application (docx) to apply.

Student Eligibility Requirements

  • All applicants must be enrolled and in good academic standing (GPA >3.0), in a College of Engineering major.
  • Students must be enrolled full-time (> 12 credit hours/semester) during the academic year in which they receive the award funding. 

  • Renewal requests must be accompanied by a progress report on project accomplishments to-date, including a list of public presentations at College and University research events.
  • New proposals from previous recipients must be accompanied by a final report from the previous project, including a list of public presentations at College and University research events.

Student/Faculty Matching

Students are encouraged to seek out faculty members in their disciplines or related areas of interest. Faculty are also encouraged to reach out to students through in-class announcements, student organization meetings and general announcements via resources such as the College of Engineering web site and social media outlets.  The Chairs can assist students in meeting faculty in their interest areas, and can assist faculty with outreach to students. 

Student award mechanism and Faculty Co-sponsor

The first $500 award will be applied to the students' account in the Fall Semester; the remaining $500 will be awarded in early in the winter semester (February) contingent upon the students' satisfactory performance in the lab as determined by the faculty mentorThe department or faculty mentor may co-sponsor the award with matching funding, but the maximum College funding will be for $1000 per student per academic year.  

Nomination

Each department can nominate up to 6 applicants.    Faculty may supervise up to two (2) Engineering UROP students per academic year.   However, only one research project per student can be nominated.  Nominated applications (each application in one pdf file) should be submitted by email to the Associate Dean for Research (OADR@eng.wayne.edu) by 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2017.

Report and Presentation

UROP awardees must submit a five page (max) report on or before 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to their faculty mentor and to OADR@eng.wayne.edu. Appendix materials, PowerPoint presentations, etc. are welcome but the submission should all be sent as a single PDF.   Selected research projects will be highlighted in the COE Undergraduate Research Website. 

UROP awardees are also expected to present their work at College and University events, including but not limited to the College of Engineering Student Innovation and Design Day and WSU Undergraduate Research Conference.  Prizes will be given to outstanding research presentations.
