Ocean Odyssey: Exploring Ocean Technology through Engineering
Hosted by the Mechanical Engineering Department at Wayne State University, Ocean Odyssey is a 4-week summer program designed for rising 9th–12th grade students to dive into the world of ocean science, renewable energy, and 3D design. Participants will explore deep ocean fluid dynamics, design and 3D print wave energy harvesters, and test them in simulated aquatic environments. With hands-on workshops, seminars from top ocean exploration institutions and an in-person tour of NOAA GLERL, students will gain exposure to cutting-edge technology and exciting STEM careers in ocean exploration.
What students will learn:
- Fundamentals of ocean dynamics: currents, waves, tides, and climate impact
- CAD modeling and design using tools like SolidWorks or Fusion 360
- 3D printing technologies and hands-on prototyping
- Renewable energy harvesting from wave motion
- Team-based engineering design and performance evaluation
- Careers in ocean science through direct engagement with industry and national labs.
What’s provided:
- All design materials, lab tools, and safety equipment
- Access to 3D printers and CAD software
- Transportation for off-campus field trip
- Lunch, snacks and refreshments
- Certificate of completion
