Undergraduate Research Opportunities

  • The college's Research Opportunities for Engineering Undergraduates program (ROEU) entered its sixth year in 2016-17. The program is designed to enhance opportunities for students to participate in research and creative activities under faculty guidance. The ROEU page has the application, guidelines, and previous awardee project information.
  • Engineering students are also encouraged to apply for the university's Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (WSU UROP) funding available through Wayne State's Office of the Provost.
  • The Michigan Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Participation (MI-LSAMP) Summer Undergraduate Research Academy (SURA) at Wayne State University is designed to provide partner school participants a comprehensive research training and enrichment experience. The WSU-SURA is an eight-week non-residential summer research opportunity scheduled each summer. Upon successful completion of the summer experience, there may be an opportunity for an additional research assignment at the student's home institution during the fall semester.
  • The Wayne State University McNair Scholars Program, established in 2004, champions excellence in academics   and leadership by providing financial and academic support to talented students who strive to excel in research and scholarship both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • The college is a member of the Michigan Space Grant Consortium. This gives our students the opportunity to apply for Michigan Space Grant Fellowships. Applications for the following year are normally due in November. Please see the website for details and be sure to discuss your application with the associate dean.

  • Injuries sustained during a car crash depend heavily on the individual. In car crashes, the children and the senior populations are the most vulnerable to fatalities. Since they differ from adults in not only structure, but strength, it is important to be able to accurately model this vulnerable population. One way of modeling how an occupant interacts with the vehicle is done through
  • Neurotechnology for neuronal recording and stimulation
  • Optical lever based parylene cantilevers for biochemical sensing
  • Piezoresistive accelerometers based on an asymmetrically gapped cantilever
  • Pinpoint exact locations of hyperactive neurons correlated to the tinnitus pathology using new technology
  • Reality game to teach physical diagnosis of pediatric patients to undergraduate nurses
  • Shale gas recovery: geomechanical applications
  • Virtual reality system for robot control
