Meet Mumtaz Usman, Ph.D, PE

Hometown: Izmir, Turkey

When did you know you wanted to become a civil engineer?  
I was always fascinated by tall buldings, highways and bridges. My first year in engineering, after taking a surveying course, I was convinced that civil engineering was a great fit for my interests.

What's your favorite thing about the field?
The ability to conceive, plan and design complex civil infrastructure projects, and to bring them to life by implementing multifaceted construction management processes.

What are some exciting areas of research in the field?  
Infrastructure asset management, building information modeling, construction safety and health improvements.

What are your tips for success?
Integrity, professionalism, commitment and good commumication built on top of strong technical skills.

What do you like to do when not teaching/researching?
Travel, reading, watch sports.
