Energy systems usually involve heterogeneous subsystems that are complex and coupled. Multiple physics, chemistry, and biology phenomena might be involved in a single energy system posing a modeling challenge. Models derived from data offer a viable approach to modeling energy systems. Evolutionary computation algorithms are well suited to optimize such models. Examples of energy systems offering opportunities to optimize energy generation and consumption are presented. The modeling and solution concepts introduced in the presentation are illustrated with industrial case studies.Professor Andrew Kusiak’s BioDr. Andrew Kusiak is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.  He is interested in applications of computational intelligence in energy, product development, manufacturing, innovation, and healthcare. Dr. Kusiak has published 13 books and over 200 papers in journals sponsored by professional societies such as AAAI, ASCE, ASME, IEEE, IIE, ESOR, IFIP, IFAC, INFORMS, ISPE, and SME.  He speaks frequently at international meetings, conducts professional seminars, and consults for industrial corporations.  Dr. Kusiak has served on editorial boards of over 40 journals, edited book series, and he is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing.

Speaker: Dr. Rajesh JugulumSenior Vice President and head of Data Quality Analytics group at Citi Group AbstractAs we know in this highly regulated environment, there is ever increasing need in creating and providing safe guards and tools to increase financial transparency and accuracy.  Such tools and mechanisms also need to satisfy business and regulatory requirements.  This situation has significantly increased the role of data and analytics in business in general.  Data capability and analytics capability should be viewed in the same way as other resources such as people, facilities, raw materials etc.  Therefore data management and analytics capability management have become critical functions in managing overall business and achieving business excellence.  In this presentation we will briefly discuss about importance of data quality to perform high quality analytics and take appropriate decisions basing on the analytics.  Further, we will also discuss about the role of data innovation and its relevance in modern industry Dr. Rajesh Jugulum's BioDr. Rajesh Jugulum is a Senior Vice President and heads up Data Quality Analytics group at Citi Group.  Prior to joining Citi, he was a Senior Vice President and Quantitative Research Executive at Bank of America.  Before joining financial industry, Rajesh was a lecturer and research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He has published many articles in leading technical journals and magazines and co-authored three books and working on another book on data quality which will be published in 2013.  In addition Rajesh holds a US patent and his two other US patents are under review.  His honors include 2002 ASQ’s Feigenbaum medal, 2006 International Technology Institute’s Rockwell medal, induction into Hall of Fame for Engineering, Science and Technology in 2006.  He has been listed in the “Who’s Who in the World” list by Marquis Who's Who publication board.

In a spectacular setting, the College of Engineering is able to express its gratitude for the hard work of its alumni, the generosity of its many donors, and the faculty, staff and friends for continuing to enhance the mission of excellence in engineering education.  Proceeds raised benefit student initiatives at the College of Engineering.
