Activities of the Wayne State Chapter IIE
Support IE Department participation in Welcome Back Program for the College
Annually: The event is designed to be a day of fun to launch the new school year. The IIE supported the event and distributed information about IE careers, job prospects, and the planned activities of the chapter.
IIE Tutoring Sessions
Weekly: IIE offered tutoring sessions every week for Math, Science, and other program prerequisites. Special sessions were developed to assist students learn MATLAB. IIE provided assistance in preparation for quizzes, and exams.
Shoes For Africa
2011: Shoes for Africa is a program executed in collaborated with Focus: HOPE (a Detroit-based civil rights organization) and local churches in Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center Historic District. IIE was responsible for 2 substations where new or gently worn shoes could be donated.
Support the Department of Industrial Engineering in visits to area high schools
Annually: Typically accompanied by a professor in our department, we first presented the resources and benefits accompanying enrollment and involvement at Wayne State University’s College of Engineering. Schoolcraft College and César Chávez Academy High School
Support of IIE Greater Detroit Chapter conference Lean Six Sigma Symposium
IIE Greater Detroit Chapter hosted Lean Six Sigma Symposium was held on November 12, 2010. Several IIE Students from Wayne State University actively volunteered and attended this educational symposium. Students have liaised with the speakers before and on the day of symposium, supported the on-site activities (registration, facility preparation, etc.). Students have also extensively interacted with the speakers and attendees from different industries such as healthcare.
Support of IIE Regional Conference in Athens, Ohio
2011: Developed funding for 30 WSU-IE students to attend the conference and become exposed to this dimension of professional activity and life-long learning.
Sponsor Seminars by IE professionals to expand learning beyond the classroom
IIE Student Chapter hosts several guest speaker luncheon events; two recent such seminars speakers are,
- Fall, 2011: Julius Reeves, Manager Product Development for Infotainment and OnStar Engineering at the GM Global Vehicle Engineering.
- Winter, 2012: Marco Andriano, Vice President of Manufacturing, North America and Noman Husain, Director of World Class Manufacturing Program both at Comau.
Organized and hosted the 2009 IIE Regional Student Conference
WSU IIE Chapter has organized the 2009 IIE Regional Conference which was a two-day event attended by many regional universities such as University of Michigan, Kettering University, Oakland University, Ohio State University, University of Dayton. The theme of the conference was “Industrial Engineering & Global Entrepreneurship", and highlights include: a keynote address by Jim Anderson, President of Urban Science, a women's networking breakfast & panel discussion, an IE-focused student Job Fair, the IIE sponsored Order Card and Student Technical Paper Competitions.
