The College of Engineering at Wayne State University offers a 12-credit Systems Engineering graduate certificate program, which is designed for technical professionals with work experience and an engineering degree. The certificate can be completed on campus or online and can serve as a bridge to the MS degree in engineering management or industrial engineering.
Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem:

Systems engineering integrates all the disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to production to operation. Systems engineering considers both the business and the technical needs of all customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs.
Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School (see Admission to the Graduate School) and either the MS program in industrial engineering or in engineering management. Specific requirements include:
- Baccalaureate degree in engineering or other technical field from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Applicants from non-ABET institutions and international applicants must submit GRE scores.
- At least one year of full-time work experience as a practicing engineer or technical leader.
- Honor point average of 3.0 in the upper division of their undergraduate program.
- Applicants whose undergraduate education is deficient in prerequisites for graduate classes may be required to take background courses that will NOT count toward the eighteen-credit degree requirement.
Applicants with less than 3.0 honor point average may be considered for admission under special circumstances.
Students must complete 12 credits consisting of one required foundation course in systems engineering; at least one required course in project management, risk/decision analysis or problem solving; and one elective course. At least one course must be 7000-level or above.
Students may later apply all certificate credits toward the Master's degree requirements in engineering management or industrial engineering, provided any such credits have been earned with a minimum 'B' grade and are within the six years time limit for completing the master's degree.

Engineering and analysis of systems, with process focus.
SYE 5470 Creative Problem Solving in Design and Manufacturing
Concepts of laws of natural development of engineering systems. Algorithm for inventive (creative) problem-solving (AIPS-85). Creative use of physical and geometrical effects in design of mechanical and manufacturing systems. Concepts of strength, stiffness, vibratory effects, reliability in mechanical design.
SYE 6840 Project Management
Principles of successful project management including: time and cost management, risk analysis, human resource management. Consideration of both operational and conceptual issues. Introduction to project management tools.
SYE 7720 Engineering Risk & Decision Analysis
Structure and analysis technical management decisions with emphasis on multiple objectives and trade-offs, and significant uncertainty.
SYE 7995 Graduate Special Topics
Special subject matter in systems engineering.
SYE 7998 Engineering Management and Leadership
Organizational leadership, team building, principles of management and communication, customer analysis, measurement. Assessment and metrics, supplier relationship, management/supplier assessment, customer relationship management.
