Civil and Environmental Engineering student named to ESPN All-American Team

Wayne State University senior swimmer and engineering student David Lutz (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) was named to the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large College Division Third Team.

Lutz, who has a 3.72 cumulative grade-point average at WSU, was named conference (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Swimmer of the Year after helping the Warriors to a second-place finish. WSU had an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships (best team finish since 1981).

The civil engineering major was named to the honor roll all eight semesters including six semesters of at least a 3.50 grade-point average. He also received the Deans' Award from the College of Engineering for having the highest cumulative gpa of any student-athlete in the college. Lutz is WSU's first Academic All-American since men's hockey player Dustin Kingston.

Lutz finished sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 200 back for first team All-America honors at the NCAA finals, and also received honorable mention All-America awards in the 100 back and four relays.

He was the GLIAC champion in both the 100 and 200 back and finished his career as the school record holder in the 100 and 200 back, 100 and 200 free, and four relays. During his collegiate career, he was a four-time first team All-American and a 10-time honorable mention All-American.

This is the second consecutive year, he was a CoSIDA Academic All-District first team selection. In addition, he was the 2003-04 WSU Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

The College Division includes NCAA Division II and III institutions while the At-Large team represents athletes from the following men's sports: crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle.
