Elizabeth Barrios

ChE, has been awarded an Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) Fellowship in the amount of $2,500. Inside a spacesuit, astronauts have to deal with a build up of perspiration and water on the skin, which leads to irritations and infections similar to the problems faced by amputees who wear airtight prosthetic liners. With her research, Barrios will be investigating and developing an aerogel prosthetic liner that would prevent the accumulation of this perspiration and water. If this liner is successful in the application of prosthetic liners, it will further be developed to be incorporated into the insides of spacesuits.
