NSBE students engage youth, teach them about engineering

PHOTO RELEASE (March 5, 2012) - The Wayne State University chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) recently organized a trip to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., with youth participants from the WSU NASA Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA). Thirteen students from the organizations visited the museum on Saturday, Feb. 25.

"We wanted to expose the young participants to engineering, as well as participate in an engaging activity," said Alanna Monae Tremble, president of the Wayne State University chapter of NSBE.

SEMAA is a national, innovative project designed to increase participation and retention of historically underrepresented K-12 youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. At the WSU location, students meet regularly to engage in hands-on, interactive learning sessions that are specifically designed for each grade level.

The NSBE members who attended also benefitted from the trip. "I believe NSBE members gained a greater pride in education," Tremble said. "It inspired us to want to reach out more to the youth of our community to mentor and assist them in making the best decisions to be successful in their lives."

According to Tremble, NSBE is in the process of organizing a trip to the Rouge Factory Tour in March.
