Students and faculty members recognized at College of Engineering Honors Convocation

DETROIT (July 9, 2014) - Wayne State University College of Engineering students and faculty members were recognized for their accomplishments at the college's Honors Convocation, held April 25 at the Gem Theatre in Detroit. More than 200 awards and scholarships were presented by the Engineering Student Faculty Board (ESFB), Engineering Alumni Association (EAA), departments, and student organizations.

Sean Carroll, chemical engineering and materials science; Norman Dotson, industrial and systems engineering; Hamzeh Omar, biomedical engineering; and Kenneth Thomas, electrical and computer engineering; received the Robert G. Wingerter Award, the highest recognition and honor given by the College of Engineering to graduating seniors who have excelled in character, leadership and scholastic ability.

Trevor Kirsch was named Outstanding Freshman/Sophomore, Hamzeh Omar was named Outstanding Senior, and Elizabeth Bielski was named Outstanding Graduate Student by the EAA.

The ESFB recognized the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the Michael Darson Award for Outstanding Student Organization. The ESFB also recognized Chin-An Tan, professor of mechanical engineering, with the Outstanding Faculty Award; Gail Evans, industrial and systems engineering academic advisor, with the Outstanding Advisor Award; and John Watkins, chemical engineering graduate teaching assistant, with the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

Lena Mashayekhy, computer science, received the Ralph H. Kummler Award for Distinguished Achievement in Graduate Students Research. Nan Deng, computer science; Lena Mashayekhy, computer science; Mahyar Movahednejad, industrial and systems engineering; and Lijian Xu, electrical and computer engineering; received Olbrot Travel Awards for Excellence in Graduate Student Research.

Luke Popiel, BSECE '13, served as the keynote speaker. Popiel works as a network engineer at General Motors.
