Wayne State College of Engineering announces two summer camps

DETROIT (April 9, 2014) - The Wayne State University College of Engineering is pleased to announce two camps designed to promote STEM education in Michigan. Camp Engineering will take place from June 16 to July 10, and Computer Science Summer Camps are set for July 7 to 24.

"We understand the importance of providing our community with opportunities to learn about engineering and computer science," says Wayne State College of Engineering Dean Farshad Fotouhi. "These camps introduce younger audiences to the limitless potential of these fields, equipping them with the tools, information and resources that are most helpful in pursing these disciplines."

The camps are open to students ages 9 to 18, and capacity is limited. Program details, fees and contact information are below.

Camp Engineering

Monday through Thursday (No programs on Fridays)
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ages: 11 to 14

Cost: $350 (Lunch included)

Session I: Android for Engineers

Dates: June 16 to July 26, 2014

  • Explore the field of computer science
  • Create an original Android application and learn cell phone programming
  • Use Android AppInventor software
  • Learn about mechanical and software design, project management and teamwork skills
  • Session II: Discover Biomedical Engineering

    Dates: June 30 to July 10, 2014

  • Explore the field of biomedical engineering
  • Create and build a prototype of artificial limbs
  • Apply the design process to imagine, plan and build solutions to everyday situations involving bioengineering
  • Learn about mechanical and software design, project management and teamwork skills
  • Registration details

    Each session costs $350. The fee includes supplies and daily lunch. Registration form and deposit must be received by June 20 to reserve space. Capacity is limited. Balance must be received by June 20.     Computer Science Summer Camps
    July 7-24, 2014

    Creating Technology Toys Camp (Ages 8 to 11)

  • Learn how to make a PicoPocket - a tiny computer - and how to make things spin, light up and play music
  • Use PicoPocket to create musical sculptures, interactive jewelry, dancing creatures and playful inventions
  • Learn how to plug lights, motors, sensors and other devices into a PicoPocket and then program them to react, interact, and communicate
  • Explorations in Robotic Camp (Ages 11 to 14)

  • Work in pairs to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Invention System
  • Learn about mechanical and software design, project management and teamwork skills
  • Creating Animation and Movies Camp (Ages 13 to 15)

  • Explore computer animation to create an original computer-generated movie
  • Learn how to use Alice, a 3-D virtual reality software program
  • Learn about mechanical and software design
  • Develop project management and teamwork skills
  • Web Technology (Ages 13 to 15)

  • Design an Internet Web page
  • Learn how to develop a personal website
  • Learn how to transfer Web files to a Web server
  • Learn how to create and establish your own website
  • Learn how to modify and edit website pages
  • Creating Android Phone Apps Camp (Ages 14 to 18)

  • Explore cell phone programming to create original Android applications
  • Learn how to use Android AppInventor software
  • Learn about mechanical and software design, project management, and teamwork skills
  • Exploration in Computer Gaming Camp (14 to 18)

  • Write video games for game controllers such as the Xbox 360 controllers
  • Explore the program techniques behind games
  • Develop simple 2-D and 3-D graphics and sound

    All Computer Science Summer Camps are $495. Discounts are available for early payment. Fee includes all supplies and field trips. Registration form and $50 deposit (non-refundable) must be received by June 20 to reserve your space. Pay in full by May 30 and receive a $50 discount. Balance must be received by June 20.
