Inclusive excellence
To change the world, everyone must have a seat at the table. This belief drives the Wayne State University College of Engineering's commitment to inclusivity. Here, we welcome all voices to the conversation in order to encourage a variety of perspectives and foster an exchange of ideas that equip students to address the environmental, health and societal challenges facing the U.S. manufacturing industry.
We are proud to be part of Michigan's most welcoming college campus, where the College of Engineering embraces students and faculty from all backgrounds, representing nearly 50 countries worldwide. We take the lead in creating opportunities for women in academia and research, and our commitment to inclusion extends to the next generation. Through our Summer Academy, we invite local children, many from Detroit, to explore exciting opportunities in STEM careers. Inclusivity is not just a means to impact today's world; it is our commitment to shaping the future.
Engineers lay the groundwork for the infrastructure that supports our society. Our College is committed to academic excellence, aiming to enhance quality of life through education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Our community is made up of individuals with varied races, ethnicities, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, socio-economic backgrounds, languages, cultures, national origins, religious beliefs, ages, abilities, life experiences, and political views. These differences are our strength, expanding our understanding of the world and enabling us to address engineering challenges with greater inclusivity and fairness.
Inclusive Excellence Committee
The Inclusive Excellence Committee in the College of Engineering is a dynamic group of engineering students, staff, faculty, and alumni from various backgrounds and departments. We are dedicated to finding ways to ensure that every member of the College of Engineering not only has equal access to opportunities but also the resources and tools needed to fully benefit from them. We are committed to making our College a place where differences are celebrated, perspectives are respectfully heard, and every individual feels they belong and have purpose.
Mission
To foster a culture where all people feel valued, included, respected, and supported in ways that empower them to achieve their full Warrior potential by:
- Promoting inclusion and fairness in education and scholarship
- Advocating for fairness in recruitment, retention, and development
- Developing and promoting fair and inclusive policies
Vision
The Inclusive Excellence Committee aims to be an empowering resource committed to education and to creating and promoting policies, programs, and opportunities that establish our College as a leader in inclusion and fairness at Wayne State University. We actively embrace the College's vision through personal, professional, and academic exploration that embraces insightful, broad perspectives and creates learning and workplace environments that are representative of our city, nation, and global society.
Detroit is a special place to live and learn because the community is so diverse. Everyone is so open to ideas and opinions, and I've seen this firsthand when working on class projects and within my student organizations.
