IIISE Chapter awards

Because of the strong involvement of our student chapter of the IISE in both the academic and professional lives of our students, the chapter won the following awards: 

  • 2013, 2014, and 2016 IISE Gold Chapter Award
  • 1st place winners of Technical Paper Competition in Regional Conference, Youngstown, OH, 2019
  • 1st and 2nd place winners of Technical Paper Competition in Regional Conference, Columbus, OH, 2018
  • 3rd place winners of Technical Paper competition in Regional Conference Athens, OH 2017
  • 2013-2016 IIE Gold Chapter Award

IISE Chapter activities

Support department participation in Welcome Back Program for the College.

Annually: The event is designed to be a day of fun to launch the new school year.  The IISE supported the event and distributed information about IE careers, job prospects, and the planned activities of the chapter.

  • Meet and Greet events where students are introduced to their fellow colleagues as well as faculty in the department.
  • After finals celebration for students to celebrate being done with exams.

IIE tutoring sessions

Weekly: IISE offered tutoring sessions every week for Math, Science, and other program prerequisites.  Special sessions were developed to assist students learn MATLAB.  IIE provided assistance in preparation for quizzes, and exams. In addition, IISE Chapter provides tutoring for elementary to high school students with algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and science twice a week.

Innovation activities

Providing students with the opportunity to showcase their ideas, designs, or products to a group of businesses, entrepreneurs, faculty, and students. 

Support Department in visits to area high schools

Annually: Typically accompanied by a professor in our department, we first presented the resources and benefits accompanying enrollment and involvement at Wayne State University's College of Engineering. Schoolcraft College and César Chávez Academy High School

Support of Big Data and Analytics conference 

Several IIE Students from Wayne State University actively volunteered and attended this educational symposium. Students have liaised with the speakers before and on the day of symposium, supported the on-site activities (registration, facility preparation, etc.). Students have also extensively interacted with the speakers and attendees from different industries such as healthcare. 

Support of IIE Regional Conference in Athens, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio

2017 and 2018: Developed funding for 30 WSU-IE students to attend the conference and become exposed to this dimension of professional activity and life-long learning.

Plan and attend company tours 

IISE Student Chapter organizes several plant tours in the South East Michigan; two recent such tours speakers are Ford Rogue Plant Tour and Motor City Brewing Tour.

Sponsor seminars by IE professionals to expand learning beyond the classroom

IISE Student Chapter hosts several guest speaker luncheon events and special events such dedicated for women industrial engineers.

Other IISE events and workshops

  • Senior dinner: Celebrating the end of the journey for senior class students by hosting a formal dinner and inviting the department faculty, the senior class along with their families and friends
  • Study nights: Weekly days where IISE students come together creating an active study environment
  • Town halls: Students are given the opportunity twice a year to meet and talk with the department's chairman and express any concerns or requests they may have.
  • Resume/Interview workshops: To assure that our students take advantage of all resources provided by the university, IISE works on bringing career service experts that teach students how to construct their resumes and improve their interview skills.
