The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected employment of chemical engineers to rise 14% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the national average in other occupations. The median salary is $112,100, and job growth is forecasted at 8% from 2022 to 2032.

A number of industry and civic leaders many located right down the street from the university consistently look to hire Wayne State chemical engineering and materials science graduates who are equipped to work in a vast array of industries including automobile manufacturing, food processing, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, electronic materials, and environmental health and safety. The versatility and interdisciplinary nature of this field provides value to professionals who want to move into project management, technical sales, consulting or other leadership roles.

Many Wayne State chemical engineering undergraduates continue their studies in graduate programs (M.S. or Ph.D.) in chemical engineering, or in related disciplines such as materials science and biomedical engineering. Chemical engineering also provides excellent undergraduate preparation for professional programs in medicine (M.D.), law (J.D.), and business (M.B.A.).
