Electrical and Computer Engineering

Howard Hess received the first bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Wayne State in 1934. He earned his master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1937 and did further graduate work at the State University of Iowa.

He became a full professor at Wayne State in 1950, was appointed head of the electrical engineering department in 1948, and associate dean of engineering in 1957. For the year 1967-68 he served as acting dean of the college.

He is a member of the national and Michigan sections of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Howard is also a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit, the American Society of Engineering Education, the Michigan Engineering Society, the Detroit Education Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also been very active with the Detroit Metropolitan Science Fair.

Howard has been honored by Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Pi Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, the Wayne State Alumni Association and the Engineering Society of Detroit.
