Master of Science in computer science: artificial intelligence (online)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of study that explores how to endow machines with the ability to learn, make decisions, reason about data and communicate with humans. In Wayne State University's online master's program in computer science with concentration in AI, you'll learn to apply problem solving, creative thinking, algorithmic design and computer programming skills to build modern AI systems.

What you'll learn in artificial intelligence

This M.S. in computer science online program with concentration in AI provides a broad foundation in AI, combined with experience in in-depth application areas. This approach offers you the skills and knowledge to succeed in spaces where rapid adoption of these burgeoning technologies is most evident, including manufacturing, health care, retail, aerospace, automotive and logistics.

Students will gain technical training and expertise that will prepare them to:

  • Work as engineers, consults and entrepreneurs in industries where AI can provide a competitive edge
  • Pursue a Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, or a related field

Curriculum

This online program requires 30 credits of coursework for graduation.  All courses must be graduate-level courses offered within the College of Engineering and must be completed in accordance with the regulations of the Graduate School and the College of Engineering.

A minimum grade point average of 3.00 for the M.S. CS with concentration in AI is required to obtain the master's degree. A maximum of one course in which a C has been received may be used to meet graduation requirements, provided this is offset by sufficient A grades to maintain the required 3.00 average.

The required courses are:

  • CSC 6500 Theory of Language and Automata
  • CSC 6580 Design and Analysist of Algorithms

Other topics you can explore include principles of cyber security, machine learning, intelligent systems, game programming and design, computer graphics, and data mining.

Real-world experiences and opportunities in artificial intelligence

You'll have opportunities to advance your studies and become a leader in artificial intelligence through multidisciplinary and translational research. Alongside faculty advisors and fellow students, you'll apply principles and theories to research models that could impact our understanding of new technologies and their effects.

Career outlook for individuals with an M.S. in computer science: artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence necessitates particular skill sets that are currently limited in the workforce.
