Master of Science in computer engineering

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in computer engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is designed to provide graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in areas such as computer systems, computer networks, and artificial intelligence. Comprehensive understanding of hardware and software components enables design and implementation of highly efficient computer-based systems. M.S. degree in computer engineering enables further advance in engineering profession in variety of industries. Curriculum of the M.S. studies is dynamically adjusted based on recommendations of the ECE Industrial Advisory Board whose membership includes representatives from Ford, General Motors, Mercedes Benz, US Army TARDEC, Semiconductor Research Corporation, L3-Communications, AMFnano, Apple, DTE. For academically oriented students it provides a solid background for further studies towards Ph.D.

Admissions

The ECE graduate program considers each application on a case-by-case basis, taking into account each individual's academic record and professional history. General guidelines and specific requirements are listed below. Please note that failing to meet specific criteria may not necessarily disqualify an applicant nor guarantee admission.

  • In accordance with Wayne State graduate admissions, the ECE department requires a minimum 2.75 GPA in upper level undergraduate coursework. A GPA of 3.0 or above is recommended. International students, please note the approximate guidelines for GPA conversion.
  • A GPA of 3.0 (four-year) or better or B average is equivalent to 65 percent for students from India or Pakistan; 80 percent for students from China.
  • A GPA of 2.8 to 3.0 is equivalent to 59 to 64 percent for students from India or Pakistan and 75 to 79 percent for students from China.
  • Wayne State undergraduates with >3.0 undergraduate GPA receive automatic admission into the MS program.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test results are optional, but recommended for students who completed their undergraduate degrees at non-ABET accredited schools.
  • A statement of purpose is optional, but is encouraged for all students, particularly those who have extenuating or unusual circumstances that may impact their application.
  • International students must meet graduate school requirements for international applicants, including:
  • The ECE MS program is open to students with bachelor's degrees in fields other than electrical and computer engineering. To ensure adequate preparation for the MS program, the ECE department requires that the student has completed prerequisite courses in circuits, linear systems, and programming. Other courses in digital electronics, microcomputers, semiconductors, electromagnetics, and control theory may also be suggested depending on the student's area of focus in the MS degree. For additional guidance, please see our prerequisite guide, and contact us to evaluate possible paths to admission. A prerequisite course requirement may be waived if a similar course were taken during the undergraduate degree. Students may take prerequisite courses as a postbaccalaureate at the undergraduate tuition rate, and apply to the MS program upon satisfactory completion of these courses.

This Master of Science degree is offered under the following options:

  • Plan A: 30 credits including a six-credit thesis
  • Plan C: 30 credits of course work

For either plan, students may choose from courses in one or more area of specialization.
